Q: What is the best approach to balancing differing values and needs of families in the classroom?
U: I understand that the teacher needs to incorporate their own life experiences/general knowledge to help make sense of the world for children. Sometimes it’s important to let the children be creative but it’s still crucial that students learn truths (like the cardinals coloring).
O: One observation I’ve noticed is that children really learn from doing hands on learning. Children always ask: “when am I ever going to need this?” and it’s better to show them the ways that they will need it.
T: I want to make sure not to forget that it’s important for students to learn how to live in the now and not always worry about the future.
E: Some easy applications for my own classroom would be to observe students more and really find out their interests and knowledge and apply lessons to fit that information gathered.
I agree about what you brought up with the cardinals and how to color them. I think sometimes people just think about expression and being creative, but like you said, it's important that teachers also help children understand the truth. And the truth is that cardinals aren't blue or purple. It was something that was new for me to read in the text and I'm glad you reminded me about it again!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your observation! "When am I going to use this" was my most common complaint in school. But when we do tasks hands on it provides a better understanding... and if not, hey, at least its more fun!
