A QUOTE for Dewey

Q: If curriculum is child-centered around student interest, how do teachers make sure they provide opportunities for real-life application for each child working within time constraints, tight funding, 30+ children, and standards? With different students every year the opportunity to use the same curriculum becomes narrower, is this feasible for teachers?
U: That the teachers role is really in planning and organizing opportunities for students learning. This parallels the in class activity we did on the scale of structure vs. freedom. I believe that through a well planned, organized, and norm centered classroom the opportunity for child-centered learning becomes easier.
O: Observations are key in the mindset of Dewey. It is through observation that you learn about your students, how they learn, their interests, where they are at in your curriculum, and an overall gauge in their social skills. I think, and I think Dewey would agree, that effective teaching starts with observations.
T: My treasure this week, is to continue to be reflective throughout my teaching process. I think it allows for better differentiation, dissolving assumptions, getting to know myself better, continuing my own learning, and creates a better learning environment for my students.
E: For me, I think the easy part will be the planning. Once I have the observations and I know my students the planning will come. I am very detail orientated and like to always be prepared, this create opportunity for me to focus on creating a child-centered classroom that functions because of the common understanding of classroom norms, procedures, and respect.

  1. Katie, I really liked your post. Reflection is so important in teaching. The idea of planning as easy, makes me smile. Talking with you this week I realize how many great ideas you have for the students. I believe you will provide a wonderful classroom environment and the students will love it!
