Codes of power

From my understanding...

Olivia, you are correct that white privilege is a code of power, but the key is, it is a type of code of power. Codes of power are certain "valuable" characteristics that give you an advantage over someone else and allow you to work within a higher level of social capital. So lots of different aspects define codes of power: race, gender, sexuality, language, economics ect.... So, for example, George W Bush has many codes of power that I do not because he is male, comes from a rich family background, and because of all of his social ties with rich buddies in Texas, the government, ect...

One of Lisa's goals as an educator is to
1.) teach kids the codes of power so that they can operate outside of their own
2.) be proud of your code of power
3.) understand how silly they are

Using Language as an example of a code of power, Lisa's goal for a ESL student would be to...
1.) teach the student English
2.) be proud of their native language
3.) understand how silly it is to have to know English to be successful in this country even though English has never constitutionally been the official language
