Questions & Reponse

Jonah: I am unsure of the term "Process Writing" as well... I don't remember it being called this, but I am pretty sure that its the idea of: Learning to write by writing. Parallel to what we did in the workshop last class with our ultra-progressive hippie teacher Olivia :) It is a good way for ELL students to become familiar with English - thanks Delpit & Google!

Gatekeeper: I believe your right, but another important aspect to remember is that they are the gatekeeper for many different gates. I think of each gate as being one of those "paths" on the messy Landscape of Learning diagram we have. It is important for us as teachers to be gatekeepers of all "paths" and not just one.

Anna & Paige: Gatekeeper vs. Gateway exams? I think in America, especially since the last article reading in ED 550, that we tend to rely on those tests as entrance into the next phase - school/work etc. With that said, if the students are only learning the test, which if measured by multiple choice and evaluated by a computer, doesn't show students creativity, innovation, problem solving, and application... then the teacher isn't the gatekeeper... unless you're talking about social justice - that's if education is more than teaching to the test.
