Museum Moment

A moment I captured at the Children's Museum was in the new community exhibit.  Two little boys were building a house out of the large lincoln logs.  They were taking turns putting the logs on.  When they were finished it looked like a miniture version of a real house. One of the boys was indside of the house that they were building and did not have a way to get out when it got to a certain height.  He knocked down the house and became very frustrated after it fell down.  He was trying to lift the logs to be able to get out but some of them were too heavy for him to lift well by himself.  His mom was watching him and telling him that he could build a new one and then he calmed down.  This experience reminded me of Piaget and how he believed that offering children real problem-solving challenges is a good strategy to drive their learning.  These boys had to use problem solving skills to figure out how to build this house.  Piaget also stressed the importance of play  to help children understand the world around them.

  1. I would be frustrated if I got stuck inside my house and had to break it down to get out too! :) This example also reminds that it's okay for children to get a little frustrated with a task - it means they're learning.
