Museum Moment: Performing Arts

The area that I found the most enjoyment in was the theater. The lights, curtains, and music were all controlled by the children. There were even microphones that were perfect size for the children. This all reminded me of Montessori with the child size furniture and the idea of learning through play. There was one little girl that got up the courage to speak into the microphone announcing that the performance was about to start and that everyone should take their seats and be quiet. She repeatedly came out to remind everyone to stop talking. You could tell she was the organized one of the group of kids on stage and when no one was cooperating she let it go and thanked everyone for coming to the show anyway. This reminded me of Vygotsky because it showed children working together and the little girl accepting differences in opinions. Another situation that happened there that goes along with that was when two little girls were playing into the microphone and one was singing and the other was just talking. By watching the two girls interact you could see that one was a support for the other one to be up there and that together they could be on stage in front of strangers and face the scary fear of stage freight.

  1. Natalie, how fun to watch the children perform. I missed that part of the museum. The connection to Vygotsky was interesting. I was happy to see the little girl thanked everyone and just took everything in stride. She was able to just have fun in the moment even though the performance didn't go as well as she wanted, awesome!

  2. I LOVED being in the theater as well. I thought it was so great how there were so many children who were all acting and cooperating together. Even though they each had different ideas about how they wanted things to go or had different ideas about what they wanted to perform. I thought they all got along so well! It does go along with Vygotsky and his ideas of social interaction and the benefits.
