Paige-but wouldn't things like the SAT, where you live to get in to schools, etc. be more like the gate than the gatekeeper? I see people as the gatekeepers (though I could be wrong!) Lisa Delpit helped open a gate for the Native Alaskan student who needed help with her writing. No one had opened that gate or access point for that student before, for whatever reason. I like your example of teachers recommending students for AP or other special courses, though. That's opening up whole new gates for students! (or certainly they can close some on the way as we saw in the video in Sara's class today)
