Quote Dewey

Q: How much assistance should teachers give to children for making sense of their world?

U: Quality education is knowing the children well, building on their experiences of past learning, to be    organized, and to plan well.  It is important to observe children to see what kind of activities they are interested in.

O: I have observed children in a first grade doing math and got an idea of what they were ready for.  For example, I have observed different ways children do addition.  It gave me an idea of the way they were thinking.

T: When people are engaged in learning something that is interesting to them and is related to their experience, the process of learning is enjoyable.

E: An application for my very own classroom would be providing an "educational" experience.  I can find out what children already know about a topic they are interested in and set up learning experiences for things they don't know about it.

  1. Amy-good question! It seems like that will be an ongoing question for all of us in many forms. How much to we assist/step in and how much do we step back and observe or ask questions to get them to where they are going.
